BOULDER – A film by Chris Dorley-Brown
about the dual-site public realm sculpture project by JOHN FRANKLAND
Boulder tells the story of the making of a major public realm project for two East London parks by artist John Frankland. Directed by acclaimed photographer and filmmaker, Chris Dorley-Brown, this film begins with an explosion at Carnsew Quarry where the two massive solid granite boulders, weighing 85 and 60 tonnes respectively, were created. The film then follows their arduous and epic journey from Cornwall to their installation in London in August 2008.
Dorley-Brown's film focuses on the work and the artist, whose intention was to make powerful sculptural landmarks for the two parks as well as to interrogate and confuse ideas about public art by inviting the works to be climbed. The response to Boulder from the art community, the local communities and the climbing community has been outstanding.
Boulder is 23 minutes long and shot using both video and time-lapse photography. It is a beautifully paced examination of the project as it unfolds and the impact it has had.
Boulder is available for purchase directly from Peer for £20 (incl. p&p).
